Are You a Procrastinator? This “Field Guide” Will Answer That Question!

Ooh!_ProcrastinateThis Field Guide to Procrastinators was brought to my attention by a professional “virtual” acquaintance of mine.  Heather Chernofsky is her name and through her biz Administrative Connexions she “frees entrepreneurs and small businesses from the admin tasks that could otherwise spoil all the fun.”  Are you having fun as a business owner or might you benefit from Heather’s services?

Anyway, I found the above mentioned Field Guide amusing and to be perfectly honest, I can relate to more of the cartoons depicted than I care to admit.  It’s fair to say I’m not a “Napper” nor am I a “Watcher”.  And since I’m a solopreneur I have no one to delegate to so I’m not a “Delegator” either (my children would argue otherwise I’m sure).  I am a horse owner though and considering the amount of time I spend at the barn I could easily add “Horsing Around” to that field guide.

So fess up…how do you procrastinate?  We know you do; we all procrastinate to some degree or another.  What stall tactic would you add to this Field Guide?  Care to comment?

Just how much of a procrastinator are you?  Are you in need of an intervention?  Probably not…you’re getting some work done aren’t you?  But perhaps a few tips to help you manage your wayward ways might be helpful.  Nellie Akalp, CEO of CorpNet.com, has some advice she shared on Mashable.com: “If you find yourself battling the urge to put important items off, here are five simple tips to get something done today.”

It goes with out saying that you’re reading this post because you’re spending time on social media.  (It’s the “Internet Researcher” in you I know.)  Well then, you’ll feel justified being here when you read this guest post from Adam Green: 3 Ways Social Media Can Help You Avoid Procrastination.  In fact why don’t we take his advice and make the most of this opportunity right here and now.  Reach out to me on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.  I’ll return the favor and in so doing we’ll make constructive use of our time.  Together.

Procrastinators United!

Sheila Applegate Receives Pinnacle Book Achievement Award

Congratulations Sheila Applegate!

Congratulations Sheila Applegate!

Well this is certainly “BuzzWorthy” news…author Sheila Applegate received notice recently that her book was chosen “one of the NABE Pinnacle Book Achievement Award Winners for Summer 2013.”  Congratulations Sheila!  As Laura Ponticello noted in a congratulatory email, “The pinnacle Award is very noteworthy.”

Nice work for a first-time author wouldn’t you say?!

Sheila Applegate

Sheila Applegate

I can’t help but get caught up in the excitement over this announcement.  As I mentioned in this previous post, I have the distinct pleasure of working with Sheila (yes, I’m her social media Buzzmeister; I’m quietly working behind the scenes supporting her with authors’ virtual solutions).  We’ve been collaborating ever since the launch of her first book, Enchanted One: The Portal to Love. when together we organized her virtual book tour.

Notice I said first book?  You may want to keep an eye on Sheila Applegate.  She’s quite gifted – in more ways than one.  Tap in to Sheila’s vibrant energy and one day you might discover that “you have the ability to create for yourself a world free from struggle.”

BUZZ ON!

It Takes a Village to Sell a Book: Tips to Help Your Favorite Author!

Now that books can actually be published online with a few key strokes (compared to bygone days) chances are you know someone who has written a book.  Or an eBook.  Think about it for a minute.  Browse the shelves of a library or your local bookstore or on Amazon.com and you’re looking at exceptional efforts made by some extraordinary individuals, each with a passion to share his or her message with the world.  Granted, some books are better than others but that’s another story.  Story – get it?!

Not everyone has the inclination or ambition to make such a mark on the world.  For those of us who don’t, unless you know an author personally, it is very easy to take their efforts for granted.  A book, just one book, represents hours, months, sometimes years of toil and trouble. While some consider it a labor of love, others may consider their book the worst “assignment” ever.

I know; I’m married to an author.

So if you know an author, or if you have a favorite author you’d like to support, what can YOU do to make a difference?  If you’re reading this post, I’m assuming you have an interest in doing so.  Well then, here are some ideas for meaningful things you can do to help spread your enthusiasm for any author dear to you.

  • Check out the author’s web site and buy a book!  Buy another one and gift it to a loved one.  Or a friend.  Or both.
  • Buy another copy and donate it to your local library.
  • TALK about the book.  Word-of-mouth advertising is priceless!
  • Follow his/her Virtual Book Tour.  But don’t just read the introductory blog posts.  Click the links!  Visit the hosts’ blogs; write comments.  Show some love!  Bloggers LOVE comments!  Internet search engines love links.  Follow an author on a virtual book tour, participate, and you’ll help make “noise” online.
  • If he or she is offering a reading at a local bookstore or other venue,  GO!  Ask him/her to sign your book.
  • Bring a friend with you! Treat him/her to a copy.
  • Help arrange for a reading at a local venue.
  • Write a book review
  • Visit Goodreads.  “Like” the book.  Recommend the book.  Leave a comment/review.
  • Visit Amazon.com. “Like” the author.  Like the book.  Recommend the book.  Leave a comment/review.  Same goes for any other online book seller site…
  • Are you a Twitter user?  Connect!  Then borrow a link from the book tour and share with your followers.  Or share your favorite quote.
  • Are you on Facebook?  “Like” the author and/or the book and tell your friends why you like it.
  • Are you a blogger?  Ask your favorite author if he/she will provide a guest post.
  • If you are a blogger, offer to interview your favorite author and publish it to your blog.
  • Make a video of your interview and post it to YouTube
  • What other social media platforms do you use?  Google+?  Pinterest?  Use them to help spread the word.
  • Share the book with your book club.
  • Start a book club!
  • Contact your favorite author and ask “what can I do to help spread the word?”
  • Check out this blog post by Jody Hedlund for some more well thought out ideas.

What ideas do you have?  Do us all a favor and share them by submitting a comment below!  I’d love to hear from you…

The Conversation Prism: A Colorful View of Current Trends in Social Media

If you’re a social media “newbie” and find yourself confused by all the options available in building your social network, this image below will either simplify the “landscape” for you – or it will serve to add to your feelings of overwhelm.  Either way, this is a bright, colorful look at current trends in social media.

This “Conversation Prism”, “a visual map of the social media landscape”, was first developed in 2008 by Brian Solis.  It is “an ongoing study in digital ethnography that tracks dominant and promising social networks and organizes them by how they’re used in everyday life.”  This image below is version 4.0 by Brian Solis and JESS3.  They are offering this image as a poster or as a free digital download on their website.

Social Media Solutions: It’s All About Relationship Building

Social media is about being social: tending to form cooperative and interdependent relationships with others (Merriam-Webster).  Isn’t that what doing business is all about?

Social Media Marketing SpecialistI must say I really enjoy working in social media.  But what I like even more are the people I work with.  If you are a large company with a large operating budget, there are very sophisticated services you can find, most with very sophisticated prices.  Some of them may even treat you as an individual with personal needs as opposed to “just” another client.  If, however, you’re operating with a smaller budget and you’re looking for someone with know-how who has the desire to get to know YOU and your specific needs then good, you’re in the right place.  The people I’ve met and continue to meet “virtually” and the resources available in this great big cyber world of ours is what motivates me to keep moving on this spinning wheel we call social media.

“Technology does not run an enterprise, relationships do.”  ~ Patricia Fripp

The average small business owner does not have time to devote to social media and to really do it justice.  An occasional tweet or blog post is not enough to develop relationships.  As I’m sure everyone in this field does, I “study” social media every day.  One pretty much has to: there is SO MUCH to learn in this rapidly developing field and in many instances, yesterday’s tips and tools are considered old news.  Do you, as a small business owner, really have time to keep up with it all?

I’m willing to bet you don’t.  As a social media Buzzmeister, I am available to support you and your needs.  There are a million and one different ways to do that.  Care to explore possibilities?  I do!
